Ep31: LinkedIn Tips and Tricks with Brendan Goleby

Two and a half years ago Brendan Goleby decided that LinkedIn was the vehicle he needed to get visibility in the Toowoomba region. He took it upon himself to start a Toowoomba based LinkedIn group which now has a membership of over 2000 people and 5000 subscribers to the email database.


How do you get the most from your LinkedIn account?

Your profile: Understand that your LinkedIn account is your online reputation. Make sure you have an accurate depiction of your credentials on your LinkedIn profile and a professional photo of yourself. Accurate summary of your skill set and what your previous experience has been.

Build your connections: Start by connecting with your clients, suppliers, family and friends. Then start to broaden with people you don’t know yet, but have the intention of getting to know better. Use it as a tool to reach out other businesses that you want to work with in the future.

Are there any benefits to having a paid subscription with LinkedIn?

Initially your free subscription will do 90% of what you want to achieve with LinkedIn. If you’re looking to use it consistently everyday, at least an hour a day, look into using the professional version of LinkedIn for about $30 a month. The benefits include being able to send private messages to people who aren’t part of your network. It also allows you to view who has viewed your profile in the last 90 days, rather than just the last 5 people to view your profile, giving you the opportunity to reach out.

When do you start seeing benefits from having more connections? 

LinkedIn has a 500+ icon, so it’s definitely the first goal. It’s an achievable target, if you work at building your network consistently. Reach out to 5 people a day and see where it gets you.

“I don’t know that person so why would I connect with them?”

The biggest lesson I’ve learnt is that if I had said no, I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet them in real life. It would have been a missed opportunity to do more business.

Is there a specific industry that can benefit from using LinkedIn?

There isn’t a specific industry over another that benefits the most. It’s about what you put in is what you get out. In every industry there is always going to be people are not only proving that they’re a specialist in that area, but by having a larger network around you, it allows you to tap into referrals and partnerships. By being visible on LinkedIn opens you and your business up to more opportunities.

Is there a benefit for creating a LinkedIn Community?

The long term benefit for the person creating it is huge as it creates a lot of visibility for that person. It opens up opportunities you wouldn’t have had before. The events provide people the opportunity to meet face-to-face and become acquainted on a more personal level.
